On Thursday, Blossom Heath Park became the site of pure watermelon-eating athleticism as the annual Watermelon Contest drew large crowds at the St. Clair Shores Thursday market. With cash prizes on the line, amateur competitors battled over glory over one of summer’s intensely refreshing fruits. The stakes were high, and the fun was even higher!

The event was extreme, with fruit scraps and juices flying everywhere in a display of dedication. While many participated in the contest, the top three athletes rose to the top of the watermelon contest. They were Sean [lastname not given], Allison Roy, and Thomas Kowalski. Sean and Allison Roy received the top cash prize for being in first and second place. Thomas Kowalski won the runner-up cash prize for being in third place.

This event is an annual tradition, spanning over two decades of St. Clair Shores history, according to Dave Rubello. The event was made possible by the Nautical Mile Merchant Association, with the melons provided by Guastello’s Village Market. The host MC was Councilman Dave Rubello, along with Councilwoman Linda Bertges and Councilwoman Candice Rusie, who helped keep the competition running smoothly.

In the end, it was a successful day of fun, enjoying one of summer’s most popular fruits. It’s a day of reminding everyone why this tradition continues to be loved by residents of all ages.
